First Day Of School - Helping Your Child Remember Important Details

The first day at school can be daunting for any child. There are new faces to meet, new routines to get used to and a new school building or classroom.

As they get older, they may crave more independence and ask if they can make their own way to school each day.

As a parent, you have to get the balance right between giving them responsibility but also helping them to stay safe.

You can teach them how to pack their own school bag and make their lunch, but sometimes there are more detailed things that they need a little extra help with such as remembering:

  • Their combination code for their locker.
  • Their lunch code for the school canteen.
  • Or maybe even the number of the bus they need to take.

Giving child independence and reassurance

So ... how can you provide your child with the level of independence that they crave? Remember, they are still protected and safe, but will they have all the information they need?

First of all, you need to think about how they travel to school. If they walk, what information would they need to carry in case they got lost or were involved in an accident? Carrying details for an ‘In Case of Emergency’ (ICE) contact would be useful. It means if anything happens, you would be one of the first people called. Why not try a Write On Wallet Card to slip into their backpack?

If they have to take a bus, could they remember the bus number to get to and from school? Having the bus route number in an easy to reach place would help jog their memory.

Once at school, they may need to remember certain codes or numbers such as the combination for the padlock on their school locker, or even their student number for the canteen. These often consist of a sequence of numbers and letters which could be difficult to remember. Having them noted down somewhere takes the pressure off your son or daughter to memorise lots of new information.

You could write the information they need in a notebook. But what if they lose it and then can’t remember any of the things they need?

The ideal solution would be something they can carry around on them at all times like an ID card or a silicone wristband. Our Personalised Silicone Wristbands come in a number of different colours and sizes and can be custom engraved with the wording of your choice. Perfect for adding your child’s ICE details as well as more specific things that they may need to remember on a daily basis.

If you want something a little more discreet we also offer Secret Message Silicone Wristbands. These bands have text engraved on the INSIDE, so that your child’s personal details aren’t on show to anyone else, but are close at hand for those moments when they may need a visual reminder. They don’t look like traditional jewellery (which is often not allowed under school rules) and can easily be worn under the sleeve of a jumper. They are easy to conceal, so they don’t need to remove their wristband and run the risk of losing it during the day. They are temporary wristbands, but after a few weeks of daily use your child should start being able to remember these important pieces of information without it. For peace of mind and that extra bit of safety they are as much of a worthwhile purchase as a good school bag or a new set of pens and pencils.

If you like the idea of something more durable, our Soul ID Bracelet can be engraved with their name on the front (so it looks like a normal bracelet), and a locker combination on the reverse. Better yet, you can have it made in school colours, so no excuse for not meeting the uniform code!

If you are considering purchasing an ID bracelet or silicone wristband for your child or young adult but are unsure what information would be useful to include on it, just drop us a message. We are more than happy to suggest which engraving option would work best for your needs.
